When someone reads a title like that in today's digital world, we could bet that person will automatically think that streaming TV rules due to its large use by the millenials, right? Wrong! We’ve done some research and found a survey conducted by the Survey Monkey that adds a percentage and demographics to each opinion, in other words, gives a face to each preference. So let’s get down to some business.
According to the survey, cable TV (Comcast, Verizon Fios, Time Warner, etc.) still rules. Half of respondents who watch cable only are 60 or older. The percentage of respondents who prefer watching Satellite TV (Direct TV, Dish Network, etc) is 16%. A little over 10% of all respondents prefer using stream TV (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) but if you focus on respondents between 18-29 years old the percentage changes to 27% who prefer streaming. Lastly, over 22% watch a combination of cable TV and streaming services.
Moreover one of the reasons cable still rules is because nearly half of respondents have the same cable and internet provider and don’t want to split them separate ways. Also 29% say that the programs they watch on TV are not available on streaming services and a quarter of people said that with TV they avoid low resolution, buffering or delays. Almost half of viewers (40%) said they tried streaming services but stopped.
Although cable is still running strong, one third of cable only users were thinking about cancelling their contract in the next year and 60% of responders who use cable/satellite AND streaming, said they were thinking about cancelling their contract the following year. And the number one reason? To cut back on costs.
On the other hand, the audience that supports streaming services say not only it is cheaper, but also more convenient for on-demand programming. Also, original content and being able to watch TV shows that are no longer airing current episodes are both important points for streaming services viewers.
Currently we have options for all tastes, being cable TV, satellite TV or streaming services. Even though streaming can be cheaper and more convenient, seems like cable and satellite TV viewers are satisfied with their services and are going nowhere. Now tell us, which service do YOU prefer and why? Leave us a comment bellow!
