With summer in full swing, it's hard to roll out of bed without the temptation of throwing on your swim suit and hitting the beach, but for some of us, that simply isn't plausible. So, how do you beat the summer heat without sporting your <bathing> suit to work?! Follow these tips to help you dress professionally while keeping cool all summer long!
1. Wear Light Clothing
Definitely avoid leather and jeans. These fabrics don’t allow the body to breathe and therefore make you sweat more as the body tries to cool down. Choose light fabrics such as cotton, linen, rayon, or fresco.
2. Avoid Dark Colored Clothing
Darker colors absorb more heat from the sun than lighter colors. Instead of navy blue, dark grey, or black, opt for white, pastel, rose, etc.
3. Take the Blazer or Jacket off When Outside
When commuting to and from work, take off the jacket so that your body can breathe before stepping into a stuffy subway or office.
4. Keep Extra Clothing at the Office
You never know where your morning coffee or mid-day snack may end up...So, keep an extra pair of pants and a shirt for those unexpected messy work days.
5. Avoid Too-Casual Pieces (For the Ladies)
Flip flops, short shorts, miniskirts, and tank tops are big no-nos. Also, revealing clothes such as sheer fabric, high skirt hemlines and blouses showing the neckline are no a go too. Even on the hottest day of the year, you should never wear these items to work. Opt for a knee length skirt or a pair of slacks and cap sleeve blouse. This type of look will allow you to keep cool while impressing your clients. :)
6. Avoid Too-Casual Pieces (For the Gentlemen)
Just because it is hot outside, doesn’t mean you have to trade the dress shoes and suit for flip flops, and shorts. Men can opt for suits and dress socks made of lighter fabrics, such as cotton or linen.
7. Most important tip: Stay Hydrated!
Maybe Mom was right all along... Drink plenty of water! Staying hydrated on those especially hot days will keep you from running on E.
